Sony WH-1000XM6: Do You Need Sony's Priciest Headphones?

Verdict

Buy the Sony WH-1000XM6 only if you specifically want this year's class-leading noise cancelling and the folding hinge matters to you. For almost everyone else — and especially the reader of this site — the smarter spend is the previous-generation WH-1000XM5 on sale, or a manufacturer-refurbished XM4. The XM6 is the best Sony has made, but it is also the most expensive, and the gap over the last two generations is narrower than the price suggests. Unless you fly a lot or work in open-plan noise, you are paying a premium for a margin of improvement you may not hear.

Who it's for

• Buy it if: you commute or fly constantly, you want the strongest ANC available today, and you value the return of a foldable design that fits a compact case.
• Skip it if: you already own the XM4 or XM5, you are on a budget, or you simply want quiet headphones to read and work in — last year's model does 90% of the job for far less.
• Don't buy at full price. This is a launch-priced flagship; it will drop. Waiting, or buying refurbished, is the rational move.
